The following websites provide a good overview or a specific genre of music.

San Francisco Symphony Kids - a nice overview of symphony instruments and activities; used as part of the ArtsEdge lesson plan below.

ArtsAlive - another nice overview of symphony instruments.

NY Philharmonic - nice online clips of composers, fun music composition interactives and instrument information.

http://www.dsokids.com - similar to all the websites of orchestras.

Essentials of Music -  has many examples of different composers and eras.  If you have a lesson plan around appreciation, there are online listening opportunties for each composer by genre or by era (lists the composers that are within an era).

Internet Public Library Music History - music through history; includes mp3 files for listening to the selections.
