Instructions

  1. Turn off the monitor, remove the plexiglass cover (if it has one), and clean the screen with (filtered water mixed with 70% alcohol  (3 parts water, to 1 part alcohol solution  Spray solution on microfiber cloth (not on the screen), wipe dry. (Pencil needs a little "oil" to remove, then clean with solution.)
  2. Set the Properties for the Desktop to 1024x768 (Square) or 1024x720 (Wide Screen) and the desktop as "none" and blue (while this is not "personal" it is the best background for contrast and presenting information for students".
  3. Reset the monitor to "Auto" adjust (sometimes this is a separate button and sometimes it is in the "Menu")
  4. Turn off the lights in the room.
  5. Run all tests in Full Screen Browser mode (F11).
  6. Brightness and Contrast are related.  Adjust Brightness, then Contrast. Brightness and Contrast
  7. Clarity - Requires two images: Sharpness and Gamma. Adjust Sharpness, then Gamma.  
  8. Screen Appearance: Shadowing (Cycles through all 7 tests; look for shadows), Dead Pixel Tests (cycle through all five colors); Scratches (and sometimes shadowing) are visible in White background test.
  9. Evaluations will be fairly subjective, but use the Rubric below.

 How bright is the screen overall compared with others?  Do you have contrast in the dark and light areas? Brightness all the way up, contrast not visible after adjustment. Brightness setting all the way up, but still has enough contrast in black and white. Brightness set above 50% (scales vary on monitor) and Contrast with or without adjustment Brightness and Contrast okay with Auto Adjustment or slight adjustments.
Clarity (Sharpness and Gamma)
 Is the screen blurry?  Are the letters and icons on the desktop clear?  Can you squint at the test and see everything blur? Squinting does not blur the images.  Gamma adjustments made or cannot be made. Squinting does blur the image.  Gamma adjustments made but still not at 2.2. Squinting blurs images.  Gamma adjustments not needed or made to blur at close to Squinting blurs images.  Auto Adjustment or very small gamma adjustments.
Screen Appearance How "clear" is the screen?  Are there any black spots or shadowing? Are there any physical scratches on the screen?
 Many dead pixels.  Shadowing is visible with blue desktop and covers more than 10% of screen area.  Scratches are extensive (dark or many) and affect viewing area.
 A few dead pixels, but not in general viewing area. Shadowing more pronounced (can see on blue background and darker in color.) Light or small number of scratches in viewing area.
 No dead pixels.  Light shadowing (not visible on blue background, but visible in dead pixel test.)  No or very light scratches in non viewing area.

No dead pixels.  Clear and consistent across screen display area. No scratches.
Overall Rating Would you recommend replacement of the monitor?  Sum and average the scores. Replacement needed immediately.  Monitor is basically unusable in classroom. Replacement is targeted with next set of replacement monitors. Monitor still has life it it; no replacement scheduled. Monitor is fine.  No replacement recommended.

 

Ideally, these tests should be done annually on all monitors on campus.
